How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
