FAQ

Is there enough space in my backyard to grow a vegetable garden.

If you don't already have a vegetable garden, you might wonder whether you'll have enough room for one. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It only takes some planning. Raised beds can be built as low as 6 inches. Containers can be used in place of raised beds. You'll still be able to get plenty of produce in any way.

Which layout is best for vegetable gardens?

The best vegetable garden layout depends on where you live. If you live in the city, you should plant vegetables together for easy harvesting. If you live in a rural location, you will need to space your plants out for maximum yield.

What is a planting calendar?

A planting calendar lists the plants that should all be planted at various times during the year. The goal is for plants to grow at their best while minimizing stress. For example, early spring crops like lettuce, spinach, and peas should be sown after the last frost date. Summer beans, squash, cucumbers and squash are all later spring crops. Fall crops include carrots and cabbage, broccoli, cauliflowers, kale, potatoes, and others.

How many hours of daylight does a plant really need?

It depends upon the type of plant. Some plants need 12 hours of direct sun per day. Some prefer 8 hours of indirect sunshine. Most vegetables need 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour period.

When to plant herbs?

Spring should be when the soil temperature reaches 55 degrees F. Plant them in full sun for best results. For basil indoors, plant seedlings in potting mix-filled pots and let them grow until they produce leaves. When the plants have started to grow, transfer them into bright indirect sunlight. After about three weeks, transplant them to individual containers and continue to water them regularly.

Can I plant fruit trees in pots

Yes! Fruit trees can be grown in pots if you're short on space. Ensure your pot has drainage holes so excess moisture won't rot the tree. You should also ensure that the pot is deep sufficient to support the root ball. This will keep the tree from becoming stressed.

How often do I need to water my indoor plants?

Watering indoor plants should be done every two days. Humidity levels can be maintained inside the house by watering. Humidity is essential for healthy plants.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many types of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
