How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Due to runoff, synthetic fertilizers can pollute both groundwater as well as surface waters. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion – A liquid product derived from fish oils. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is the excrement of seabirds and bats. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix well. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
