FAQ

What is your favorite vegetable garden layout?

The location of your home will dictate the layout of your vegetable garden. For easy harvesting, it is best to plant vegetables in the same area as your home. For maximum yield, however, it is best to space your plants if you are in a rural area.

What is the purpose of a planting calendar?

A planting calendar is a list of plants that should be planted at different times throughout the year. The goal of the planting calendar is to increase plant growth while minimizing stress. For example, early spring crops like lettuce, spinach, and peas should be sown after the last frost date. Spring crops later include squash, cucumbers, summer beans, and squash. The fall crops include potatoes and carrots.

What's the best way to keep my indoor plant alive?

Indoor plants can live for many years. However, it's important to repot your plant every few months to help promote new growth. Repotting is simple. Remove the old soil and place fresh compost.

Can I plant fruit trees in pots

Yes! Yes! Your pot should have drainage holes to ensure that the tree doesn't get rotted by excess moisture. Also, ensure the pot is deep enough to hold the root ball. This will prevent the tree from being stressed.

What amount of sunlight does a plant require?

It depends upon the type of plant. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunlight per day. Some prefer 8 hours of indirect sunshine. Vegetables require at least 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour period.

What kind of lighting works best for growing plants indoors?

Because they emit less heat than traditional incandescent bulbs, Florescent lights are ideal for indoor plant growth. They provide constant lighting that doesn't flicker or dimm. Fluorescent bulbs can be purchased in regular and compact fluorescent versions. CFLs use up to 75% less energy than traditional bulbs.

Which seeds should start indoors?

The best seed for starting indoors is a tomato seed. Tomatoes are very easy to grow and produce fruit year-round. When growing tomatoes in pots, be careful when transplanting them into the ground. If you plant too early, the soil may dry out, which could cause the roots to rot. Plant diseases like bacterial disease can quickly kill plants.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made of natural substances like manure, compost and fish emulsion. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
