How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term "organic" refers to using non-synthetic materials in their production. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
