Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose risks to human health and the environment. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. * Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
