FAQ

How many hours does a plant need to get light?

It depends on the plant. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunlight per day. Some plants prefer 8 hours of direct sunlight. The majority of vegetables require 10 hours of direct sunshine per 24 hour period.

When to plant herbs?

Plant herbs in spring when the soil temperatures are 55 degrees Fahrenheit. The best results are achieved when they are in full sunshine. To grow basil indoors, place seedlings in pots filled with potting mix and keep them out of direct sunlight until they sprout leaves. Once the plants begin to grow properly, you should move them into bright indirect lights. After three weeks, you can transplant them to individual pots and water them every day.

Which seeds should you start indoors?

Tomato seeds are the best choice for starting indoors. Tomatoes are easy to grow, and they produce fruit all year round. If you are growing tomatoes in pots, take care when you transplant them to the ground. Planting too soon can cause soil to dry out and root rot. It is important to be aware that bacteria wilt can quickly kill plants.

How do I prepare the soil for a garden?

Preparing soil to grow vegetables is very simple. The first step is to remove any weeds that may be in the area where your vegetable garden will be planted. After that, add organic material such as composted soil, leaves, grass clips, straw or wood chips. After watering, wait for plants to sprout.

What is a planting schedule?

A planting calendar lists the plants that should all be planted at various times during the year. The goal of the planting calendar is to increase plant growth while minimizing stress. For example, early spring crops such as peas, spinach, and lettuce should be sown after the last frost date. Squash, cucumbers, and summer beans are some of the later spring crops. Fall crops include potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower and broccoli.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term "organic" means that they are produced using non-synthetic material. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers are dangerous for the environment as well as human health. To produce, synthetic fertilizers require a lot of energy and water. Runoff from synthetic fertilizers can also pollute groundwater and surface water. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are many kinds of organic fertilizers.

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It provides a source of vitamins A and C, iodine, and iron.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal - The remains of animals slaughtered. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

For organic fertilizer mix equal amounts of manure, compost and/or fishemulsion. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. To see new growth, you will need to apply more fertilizer every 2 weeks.
