How to grow basil

Basil is one herb you can use to make many different dishes in your kitchen. Basil can be used to flavor dishes and add flavor to sauces, soups, pasta, and desserts. Here are some tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Carefully choose your location. Basil is an annual and will not live more than one season if it isn't in the right spot. It prefers full sunshine but can tolerate some shade. If you are growing it outside, choose a spot with good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should be planted at least two weeks before the last frost date. In small pots with potting mixture, sow seeds about 1/2 inch deep. Cover the pots with clear plastic wrap and keep the pots in a warm area out of direct sunlight. Germination usually takes about ten days. After they have germinated move them into a cool, shaded place where the temperature stays around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Once the seeds are big enough, it's time to transplant them. Place the seedlings in larger containers and remove the plastic wrap. Fill each container with potting mix and add some gravel or pebbles to help drain excess moisture. As needed, add more potting mixture. The containers should be placed in a sunny location or under indirect lighting. Mist the plants regularly to keep them from wilting.
  4. Once the danger of frost is over, cover the plants with a thick mulch layer. This will protect the plants from freezing weather and decrease water loss.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil needs to be watered regularly in order for it to thrive. You can use a rain gauge or a water gauge to determine the amount of water that your plants need. A timer can be used to shut off the irrigation system when it is dry.
  6. Take your basil out at the peak of its life. To encourage bushier growth, pick the leaves often.
  7. Dry the leaves on paper towels or screens. Dry the leaves in glass jars and bags in the fridge.
