How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one of the most versatile herbs you can use in your kitchen. Basil is great for flavoring foods, including soups, sauces and pastas. Here are some tips to grow basil indoors.

  1. Carefully choose your location. Basil is an annual plant that will only survive one season if placed in the correct place. Basil likes full sunlight but can be tolerant of partial shade. It is best to grow it outdoors in an area with good air circulation.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds must be planted at the latest two weeks before last frost. In small pots with potting mixture, sow seeds about 1/2 inch deep. Clear plastic wrap should be used to cover the pots. Germination usually takes about ten days. After the pots have germinated, place them in a sunny area where temperatures are around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. When the seedlings reach maturity, you can transplant them. The plastic wrap should be removed and the seedlings transplanted into larger containers. To drain excess moisture, fill each container with potting mixture. As needed, add more potting mixture. Place the containers outside in direct light or in a sunny area. Mist the plants daily to prevent wilting.
  4. Apply a thick layer mulch to the top of your plants after the danger of frost has passed. This will protect them from cold weather and reduce water loss.
  5. Regularly water the plants. Basil needs to be watered regularly in order for it to thrive. You can use a rain gauge or a water gauge to determine the amount of water that your plants need. Use a timer, which will turn off the irrigation when there is no rain.
  6. You should pick your basil at its peak. For bushier growth, pick leaves more often.
  7. Dry the leaves on paper towels or screens. Dry the leaves in glass jars and bags in the fridge.
