FAQ

Do I need to buy special equipment to grow vegetables?

It's not true. All you need to do is use a shovel, trowels, watering containers, and maybe even a rake.

When is the best time to plant flowers?

Planting flowers is best done during springtime when temperatures are milder and the soil is moist. If you live in a cold area, plant flowers only after the first frost. The ideal temperature to grow plants indoors is 60 degrees Fahrenheit.

Is there enough space in my backyard to grow a vegetable garden.

If you don't already have a vegetable garden, you might wonder whether you'll have enough room for one. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It only takes some planning. For example, you could build raised beds only 6 inches high. Or you can use containers to build raised beds. You'll still get lots of produce.

Which type of lighting is best for indoor plants?

Florescent lights work well for growing plants indoors because they emit less heat than incandescent bulbs. They are also consistent in lighting, and do not flicker or dimm. There are two types of fluorescent bulbs: regular and compact fluorescent (CFL). CFLs use up to 75% less energy than traditional bulbs.

How often should I water indoor plants?

Indoor plants need to be watered every two days. Watering helps maintain humidity levels inside the house. Healthy plants require humidity.

How To

Organic fertilizers are available for garden use

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers can be used in industrial processes. Because they are quick and efficient, synthetic fertilizers are popular in agriculture. They don't require laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Moreover, many synthetic fertilizers pollute groundwater and surface waters due to runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It contains bacteria, enzymes, and other substances that break down the waste into simple compounds which can be easily absorbed by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It's porous so it is able to retain moisture well, and slowly releases nutrients.

* Fish Emulsion- A liquid product that is made from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It also contains trace elements, phosphorous and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract – A concentrated solution containing minerals extracted from kelp. It is a good source of vitamins A, C, iron, and iodine.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It contains nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, sodium, magnesium, sulfate, chloride, and carbon.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains phosphorus, potassium, nitrogen, and trace minerals.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix thoroughly. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. You can mix one part of the fish emulsion with two portions of compost if you don't have enough.

Apply the fertilizer to the soil by using a shovel and tiller. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
