FAQ

It depends on which plant it is. Some plants require 12 hours of direct sunshine per day. Some plants prefer 8 hours of direct sunlight. Most vegetables need at least 10 hours of direct sunlight per 24-hour time period.

How do I determine the type of soil that I have?

The color of the soil can tell you how much organic matter it contains. Darker soils contain more organic matter than lighter-colored ones. Soil tests are another option. These tests determine the amount of nutrients in the soil.

How To

Use organic fertilizers in your garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution is harmful to wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure - is made when livestock eat nitrogen (a plant food nutrient). It contains bacteria and enzymes that break down the waste into simple compounds that plants can absorb easily.

* Compost: A mixture of animal manure, grass clippings (decomposing leaves), vegetable scraps (vegetable scraps) and grass clippings (grass clippings). It is rich for nitrogen, carbon, potassium and magnesium. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It has the ability to dissolve oils, fats and is very similar to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano is excrement from amphibians, seabirds, bats and reptiles. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium as well as sodium, magnesium, sulfate and chloride.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don’t own all three ingredients, one can be substituted for the other. If you only have the fish-emulsion you can substitute one with another.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You will need to add more fertilizer every two weeks until you see signs of new growth.
