How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers are made with natural substances like compost, manure, seaweed extract and blood meal. The term organic refers to the use of non-synthetic materials for their production. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. In addition, they require large amounts of energy and water to produce. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It has trace elements such as phosphorous, nitrogen and nitrate.

* Seaweed Extract - a concentrated solution of minerals extracted from kelp, red algae, brown algae, and green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous as well as potassium, sodium and magnesium.

* Blood Meal is the meat and bones of animals that have been slaughtered. It contains protein, which makes it useful for feeding poultry and other animals. It also has trace minerals such as phosphorous, potassium, nitrogen and other nutrients.

Combine equal parts of compost, manure and/or fish-emulsion to make organic fertilizer. Mix thoroughly. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, you could mix 1 part of the fishemulsion with 2 parts of compost if only you have access to fish emulsion.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
