FAQ

Do I need any special equipment?

You're not wrong. A shovel, trowel and watering container are all you need.

Can I grow fruit tree in a pot?

Yes! Yes, pots are possible to grow fruit trees if space is tight. Ensure your pot has drainage holes so excess moisture won't rot the tree. Also ensure that the pot is large enough to accommodate the root ball. This will stop the tree becoming stressed.

What should you do first when you start a garden?

The first step to starting a garden is to prepare it. This includes adding organic matter such as composted manure, grass clippings, leaves, straw, etc., which helps provide plant nutrients. Next, plant seeds or seedlings into prepared holes. Finally, water thoroughly.

Do I have enough space to plant a vegetable or fruit garden in my backyard?

If you don’t have a garden yet, you may wonder if there is enough room to start one. The answer is yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It just takes some planning. Raised beds can be built as low as 6 inches. Containers can be used in place of raised beds. You'll still be able to get plenty of produce in any way.

How do I know what type of soil I have?

The color of the soil can tell you how much organic matter it contains. Organic matter is more abundant in dark soils than those with lighter colors. Soil testing is another option. These tests are used to determine the quantity of nutrients in soil.

What is a plant calendar?

A planting calendar lists the plants that should all be planted at various times during the year. The goal is for plants to grow at their best while minimizing stress. Early spring crops like spinach, lettuce, and peas must be sow after the last frost date. Summer beans, squash, cucumbers and squash are all later spring crops. Fall crops include carrots and cabbage, broccoli, cauliflowers, kale, potatoes, and others.

What seeds should be started indoors?

A tomato seed is the best seed to start indoors. Tomatoes produce year-round fruit and are easy to plant. It is important to be careful when planting tomatoes in containers. If you plant too early, the soil may dry out, which could cause the roots to rot. Also, be aware of diseases such as bacterial wilt, which can kill plants quickly.

How To

Organic fertilizers to be used in the garden

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers are chemical compounds used in industrial processes. These fertilizers are commonly used in agriculture, as they can provide nutrients to plants quickly without the need for complicated preparation. However, synthetic fertilizers present risks to both the environment- and human health. They also require large amounts energy and water to make. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is detrimental to humans and wildlife alike.

There are several types of organic fertilizers:

* Manure is a product of livestock eating nitrogen-rich food (a plant nutrient). It is made up of bacteria and enzymes, which break down the waste into simpler compounds that can be absorbed easily by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It works similarly to soap in that it dissolves oils and fats. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano - excrement from seabirds, bats, reptiles, and amphibians. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal - the remains of slaughtered animals. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace mineral, phosphorus as well as potassium, nitrogen, and phosphorus.

Make organic fertilizer by combining equal parts manure, fish emulsion, and compost. Mix thoroughly. If you don't have all three ingredients, you can substitute them one for another. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. One quarter cup of the fertilizer should be spread per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
