FAQ

What's the difference?

Hydroponic gardening makes use of nutrient-rich water rather than soil to grow plants. Aquaponics combines fish tanks with plants to create a self-sufficient ecosystem. Aquaponics is like having your own farm in your home.

What is a planting calendar?

A planting plan is a list of plants to be planted at different times each year. The goal is for plants to grow at their best while minimizing stress. The last frost date should be used to sow early spring crops, such as spinach, lettuce, and beans. Squash, cucumbers, and summer beans are some of the later spring crops. Fall crops include carrots and cabbage, broccoli, cauliflowers, kale, potatoes, and others.

What vegetables can you grow together?

The combination of tomatoes and peppers is great because they love the same temperatures and soil conditions. They are a good match since peppers need colder temperatures to produce their best flavor. To grow them together, you can start seeds indoors around six weeks before planting. Once the weather warms up, transplant the tomato and pepper plants outdoors.

How long can an indoor plant be kept alive?

Indoor plants can last for many years. To promote new growth, it is essential to repot your indoor plants every few month. Repotting is simple. Just remove the old soil, and then add fresh compost.

Can I grow vegetables indoors

Yes, it is possible to grow vegetables in a greenhouse during winter. A greenhouse or grow light will be required. You should check the laws in your area before you purchase a greenhouse.

When should you plant herbs?

When the soil temperature is 55°F, herbs should be planted in spring. The best results are achieved when they are in full sunshine. For basil indoors, plant seedlings in potting mix-filled pots and let them grow until they produce leaves. After plants begin to grow, you can move them into indirect sunlight. After approximately three weeks, transplant them into individual containers. Continue to water them as needed.

Which month is the best to start a vegetable gardening?

The best time to plant vegetables is from April through June. This is when the soil temperature is highest and plants grow most quickly. You might want to wait until July/August if you live in a cold area.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers can be made from natural substances, such as compost, manure and seaweed extract. Organic fertilizers are made from non-synthetic materials. Synthetic fertilizers include chemicals used in industrial processes. Synthetic fertilizers are used widely in agriculture as they supply nutrients quickly and efficiently to plants without the need for laborious preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Many synthetic fertilizers are also harmful to groundwater and water surface because of runoff. This pollution is both harmful to wildlife as well as humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure is created when livestock eat foods containing nitrogen (a nutrient for plants). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost - A mixture of grass clippings from the lawn, decaying leaves, vegetable scraps, and animal dung. It is rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulfur, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, boron, molybdenum, chlorine, and carbon. It is highly porous so it can retain moisture well and release nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion: A liquid product derived primarily from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It also contains trace elements like phosphorous, Nitrogen, and other elements.

* Seaweed extract - A concentrated solution of minerals from kelp and red algae. It is rich in vitamins A, C and iodine as well as iron.

* Guano, excrement taken from amphibians, bats, reptiles and seabirds. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It's rich in protein and can be used to feed poultry and other animals. It also contains trace minerals like phosphorus, potassium and nitrogen.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t have access, you can mix one ingredient with the other. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Use a shovel to evenly distribute the fertilizer over the soil. About a quarter of a cup of the fertilizer is needed per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
