How To

Organic fertilizers for garden use

Organic fertilizers include manure (compost), fish emulsions, seaweed extracts, blood meal, and compost. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers contain chemicals used in industrial processes. They are widely used in agriculture because they provide nutrients to plants quickly and efficiently without requiring laborious preparation methods. However, synthetic fertilizers pose a risk to the environment and our health. Synthetic fertilizers require large amounts of energy as well as water to be produced. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This pollution can be harmful for both wildlife and humans.

There are many organic fertilizers available:

* Manure - produced when livestock eat food containing nitrogen (a plant nutrient). It has bacteria and enzymes that help to break down the waste, resulting in simple compounds that are easy for plants to absorb.

* Compost - a mixture of decaying leaves, grass clippings, vegetable scraps, and animal manure. It is high in nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium as well as calcium, magnesium, sulfur. It is highly porous, so it holds moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion - a liquid product derived from fish oil. It can dissolve oils and fats, similar to soap. It contains trace elements and phosphorous as well as nitrogen and nitrogen.

* Seaweed Oil - A concentrated mixture of minerals taken from kelp, red and brown algae, as well as green algae. It contains vitamins A and C, iron, and Iodine.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen, sulfur, chloride and carbon.

* Blood Meal: The remains of animal carcasses. It is rich in protein which is useful for feeding birds and other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

Mix equal amounts of compost, manure, and/or fish oil to make organic fertilizer. Mix well. If you don’t possess all three ingredients you can substitute one for the other. For example, if you only have access to the fish emulsion, you can mix 1 part of fish emulsion with two parts of compost.

Apply the fertilizer by spreading it evenly using a tiller or shovel. Spread about a quarter cup of the mixture per square foot of growing space. You will need more fertilizer to see signs and growth every two weeks.
