FAQ

Can I grow fruit trees inside pots?

Yes! Yes, pots are possible to grow fruit trees if space is tight. You should make sure that your pot has drainage holes to keep excess moisture from rotting the tree. Also ensure that the pot is large enough to accommodate the root ball. This will help prevent stress on the tree.

How can I tell what kind of soil is mine?

The dirt's color can tell you what it is. You will find more organic matter in darker soils that those of lighter colors. Another option is to test the soil. These tests can measure the soil's nutrients.

What type of lighting is best to grow plants indoors?

Because they emit less heat than traditional incandescent bulbs, Florescent lights are ideal for indoor plant growth. They also provide consistent lighting without flickering or dimming. You can find regular or compact fluorescent fluorescent bulbs. CFLs require 75% less energy than traditional bulbs.

When should you plant herbs?

Plant herbs in spring when the soil temperatures are 55 degrees Fahrenheit. They should be in full sun to get the best results. Plant basil indoors by placing seedlings into pots containing potting mix. Keep them out of direct sun until they sprout leaves. After plants begin to grow, you can move them into indirect sunlight. After three to four weeks, transplant them into individual containers. Keep them hydrated.

Do I have enough space to plant a vegetable or fruit garden in my backyard?

If you don’t have a garden yet, you may wonder if there is enough room to start one. Yes. A vegetable garden doesn't take up much space at all. It just takes some planning. For example, you can build raised beds just 6 inches high. Or you can use containers to build raised beds. You'll still be able to get plenty of produce in any way.

How To

Organic fertilizers for your garden

Organic fertilizers are made from natural substances such as manure, compost, fish emulsion, seaweed extract, guano, and blood meal. Non-synthetic materials are used in the production of organic fertilizers. Synthetic fertilizers are chemicals that are used in industrial processes. They are often used in agriculture since they provide nutrients to plants efficiently and quickly, without the need of complicated preparation. Synthetic fertilizers can pose risks to the environment and human health. These fertilizers also require high amounts of energy, water and time to make. Synthetic fertilizers also pollute surface and groundwater through runoff. This is a problem for wildlife and humans alike.

There are several kinds of organic fertilisers:

* Manure is produced when livestock eat nitrogen-rich foods (a plant nutrient). It's made of bacteria and enzymes which break down the waste to simple compounds that can be taken by plants.

* Compost is a mixture from vegetable scraps, grass clippings and decaying leaves. It is rich in carbon, nitrogen, phosphorous, potassium, magnesium and sulfur. It is porous so it retains moisture well and releases nutrients slowly.

* Fish Emulsion is a liquid product made from fish oil. It is similar to soap in its ability to dissolve oils and fats. It contains phosphorous, nitrogen, and trace elements.

* Seaweed Extract is a concentrated solution that contains minerals extracted from red algae, brown algae and green algae. It's a great source of vitamins A and C as well as iodine and iron.

* Guano - Excreta from amphibians and seabirds. It contains nitrogen and phosphorous, potassium as well sulfate, salt, chloride, carbon, sodium, magnesium and other minerals.

* Blood Meal, the remains from slaughtered animals. It is rich with protein, making it useful for feeding poultry or other animals. It also contains trace minerals, phosphorus and potassium.

To make organic fertilizer, combine equal parts of manure, compost, and/or fish emulsion. Mix thoroughly. You can substitute one with another if you don't have access to all three ingredients. If you have only access to the fish oil emulsion, then you can combine 1 part fish emulsion and 2 parts compost.

Spread the fertilizer evenly on the soil with a shovel, or tiller. The fertilizer should be about 1/4 cup per square foot. You'll need to add fertilizer every two weeks until new growth appears.
