How To

How to grow basil

Basil is one of your most versatile herbs. Basil is great for flavoring foods, including soups, sauces and pastas. These are some helpful tips to help you grow basil indoors.

  1. Carefully choose your location. Basil is an annual plant that will only survive one season if placed in the correct place. Basil likes full sunlight but can be tolerant of partial shade. If you want to grow it outside choose an area that is well-ventilated.
  2. Plant the seeds. Basil seeds should be planted two weeks before the last frost date. Plant the seeds in small pots that are 1/2 inch deep. Cover the pots with clear plastic wrap and keep the pots in a warm area out of direct sunlight. Germination can take up to ten days. Once the pots are germinated, you can move them to a place where temperatures remain around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. Transplant the seedlings once they're big enough to handle. The plastic wrap should be removed and the seedlings transplanted into larger containers. Each container should be filled with potting mix. To help remove excess moisture, add gravel or pebbles. Add more potting mix as needed. Place the containers in indirect or sunny light. Mist the plants daily to prevent wilting.
  4. After frost danger has passed, add a thick layer to mulch. This will prevent them from frost damage and help to reduce water loss.
  5. Water your plants frequently. Basil needs to be hydrated regularly to ensure its survival. To check how much water your plants need, you can use a rain gauge. Use a timer, which will turn off the irrigation when there is no rain.
  6. Pick your basil when it reaches its prime. Pick the leaves regularly to encourage bushier, healthier growth.
  7. Use paper towels to dry leaves. Store dried leaves in glass jars or bags in the refrigerator.
